Diffusion and Swelling Measurements in Pharmaceutical Powder Compacts Using Terahertz Pulsed Imaging

A technique has been introduced to assess transport and swelling in pharmaceutical powder compacts.

Terahertz Pulsed Imaging (TPI) was used to analyse both swelling and transport in tablets containing hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose. In this paper a technique is introduced to probe the swelling and hydration in pharmaceutical tablets non-intrusively, with the potential to look at more rapid processes. This was achieved by exploiting the transparency of polymers to terahertz radiation as well as the contrast between the water and matrix forming polymer.

This paper also highlights the potential of relating this information to micro-structural analysis obtained using x-ray micro-computed tomography and helium pycnometry.
