Xudong Liu is visiting the TAG group for the next 6 months! Welcome to Cambridge and the TAG group!
September was a busy month for the members of the TAG group! The group spent a majority of the month travelling around the world to present their work and catch up collaborators. The month was capped off by the annual IRMMW-THz meeting, which was held in Copenhagen this year.
The work showcases the ability of terahertz spectroscopy to probe temperature dependant changes in the low-frequency vibrational modes, and ultimately relates them to intermolecular anharmonicity.
A review of the pharmaceutical applications of Terahertz radiation written by members of the TAG group was recently featured on the cover of the European Pharmaceutical Review. Well done to everyone!
Johanna Sauerwein, an undergraduate student from Friedrich Schiller University Jena in Germany, has completed a highly productive three-month visit to the TAG group today. She was a valuable addition to the lab, and was a critical component of the research performed during her time. She effectively immersed herself in all areas of research, both on the imaging and spectroscopic sides. She will be sorely missed!
Axel and Mike, along with group alumnus Hungyen, delivered a series of lectures at the prestigious Rank Prize Funds Symposium on Terahertz Emitters and Emerging Applications in Grasmere, UK. They were joined by leaders throughout the entire Terahertz field for a week of very productive seminars and meetings.
Mike attended and presented work at a PRACE and CECAM sponsored workshop on high performance computing and molecular simulation in Dublin, Ireland in May. The workshop highlighted recent technological advances in computing, and the resulting new horizons for modelling molecular systems.
Recent work performed in collaboration with researchers at Syracuse University on connecting the terahertz vibrational motions of polyproline helices to their elasticity is featured on the cover of Angewandte Chemie.
A brand new commercial terahertz spectrometer was delivered today. The instrument was built by local manufacturer Teraview Limited.
Axel presented a summary of terahertz applications to the Infrared and Raman Discussion Group meeting held at the Renishaw Headquarters in Gloucestershire
Daniel Markl and Michael Ruggiero presented work at the 10th Annual World Meeting on Pharmaceutics, Biopharmaceutics, and Pharmaceutical Technology in Glasgow, Scotland. Daniel presented his poster titled 'Mechanistic Understanding of Disintegration in Immediate Release Tablets', and Michael delivered a presentation titled 'Stability Prediction of Amorphous Drug Molecules'.
The Terahertz Applications Group has undergone a dynamic shift over the past few months, as (now) former members have moved on to new positions and a new team has taken over.
Together with Teranet, an EPSRC-funded network of UK Universities and companies active in terahertz science and technology, the Molecular Spectroscopy Group and East Anglia Region of the Analytical Division of the RSC will jointly host the 4th terahertz spectroscopy meeting in Cambridge. Following three successful meetings in 2009, 2011 and 2013 with the RSC, this year's meeting is the first one involving Teranet and to mark the occasion we will return to Gonville & Caius College in Cambridge. The meeting will focus on recent advances in terahertz spectroscopy.
Bosch Packaging Technology/Huettlin GmbH in Germany recently hosted the 'Expert of Solids' certification Seminar where Hungyen delivered an invited talk titled 'In-line Measurement of Film Coating Processes'
